Winners and Losers from Steelers Fourth Preseason Game

The Steelers beat the Carolina Panthers 17-14 in the final preseason game, but as always, the score doesn’t matter in preseason games. What does matter is on September 2nd, the Steelers have to cut down the roster to 53. That means over 40 players will need to be cut. This game was a showcase for a lot of players to fight to be on the roster. For some players, their career was determined by how they played tonight. Who looked good and who didn’t:

Winners

Terrell Watson

This guy is an example of someone that went from a long shot to make the roster to either making the roster or the practice squad. He played the entire first half, getting 80 yards on 15 carries (89 yards on 19 carries for the whole game) and looked great. He ran hard and runs in a punishing style. Does he make the team over Knile Davis and Fitzgerald Toussaint?

Justin Hunter

The competition for wide receiver has been fierce all training camp and Justin Hunter definitely made a strong case for making the team tonight. He caught 3 passes for 75 yards, including a beautiful 58 yard touchdown. Hunter, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Sammie Coates. Cobi Hamilton, Marcus Tucker and Demarcus Ayers are fighting for 2 spots. Did Hunter do enough to make the team? One knock against him is he doesn’t play special teams and Darrius Heyward-Bey does.

Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs was drafted as a project and played almost all of the first two preseason games because Landry Jones was hurt. He has been shaky this preseason but had a really nice game tonight, throwing a beautiful 55 yard touchdown to Justin Hunter and leading the team to a last minute score to win the game. He still has a lot to learn, but he has made progress this preseason.

Mike Hilton

Hilton and Terrell Watson might be tied for training camp MVP. Hilton is everything Senquez Golson was supposed to be. He had another great game and is probably a lock to make the team. He might even start at clot cornerback.

Losers

Trey Williams

This was Williams’ last chance to make a team as a punt returner. He fumbled a punt, which ends his career as a Steeler and possibly his NFL career.

Cobi Hamilton

Cobi had a nice first preseason game but had a careless fumble in tonight’s game. In a very crowded wide receiver group, Hamilton just threw away his shot (see what I did there?) .

Cam Sutton

Sutton looked great in last week’s game but has been hurt all training camp and hurt his hamstring again in this game. He might start the season on injured reserve.
