The Steelers lost their first preseason game this year to the Colts, 19-15, not that the score matters. The first team offense played a couple of series and looked good, until they almost got Ben Roethlisberger killed on a blind side blitz that resulted in a fumble. Who looked good and bad in this game?
Landry looked very good in his preseason debut, especially considering he has not practiced much this training camp. He went 21 of 31 for 163 yards, with a really nice touchdown and a really ugly interception in the end zone. Considering Joshua Dobbs has looked shaky in the preseason and is still learning, Landry showed that he can be a capable backup in case Ben gets hurt.
He only rushed 4 times for 26 yards, but Conner looked great. He ran over defenders and showed that he has potential to be a star in the NFL. But why did he play in the second half after Knile Davis and Fitzgerald Toussaint? What exactly is the depth chart at running back?
The third round draft pick has not played or practiced much because of an injury, but Sutton looked great. He had a beautiful break up of a pass and even when he got beat, recovered quickly. The defensive backfield is still uncertain so it is very possible Sutton could be a starter at cornerback when the regular season starts.
He only played about a dozen snaps, but Shazier made them count. He had an interception and showed that he can be a dominant player on the defense. The biggest question about Shazier is whether he can stay healthy. If he can, the Steelers defense might not be so bad after all.
Davis got the start at running back for this game and played with the first team offense, getting 21 yards on 7 carries. What does this mean for the depth chart at running back? It looks like he is in a battle for a roster spot with Fitzgerald Toussaint. If that is the case, he may have solidified his spot on the roster.
Watson has really had a good training camp and looked great tonight. He rushed for 40 yards on 8 carries and looked fantastic. He probably will just be on the practice squad, but he is a big back (240 lbs) that is hard to take down.
With the exception of Fitzgerald Toussaint getting a leg injury, there were not any significant injuries and that is all that matters in preseason games. The last thing this team needs is an injury similar to what happened to Odell Beckham Jr. last week.
Russ Cockrell and Robert Golden
Another game, and another bad showing for these two. They both have had horrible camps. Cockrell is listed as the starter at cornerback, but has he lost his job to Coty Sensabaugh or Mike Hilton?
Toussaint did not play much in this game due to an injury he suffered and it could not have come at the worst time. He is battling for a roster spot with Knile Davis and getting hurt may have caused him to not make the team.
You have to feel bad for the guy. This is his third year in training camp and he has been injured almost the entire time every camp. He has not practiced or played at all this year. As the saying goes, you cannot make the club in the tub.
