Over the past week the Cardinals found themselves placing closer Trevor Rosenthal and Adam Wainwright on the DL. Both did not look comfortable throwing the ball in each of their last outings. Both pitchers were throwing unusually slow, which was noticible especially for flame throw Trevor Rosenthal.
Wainwright mentioned after his start that when his elbow feels a little off he throws slower on purpose for better control. Wainwright, who had Tommy John in the past, was put in the DL and the Cardinals recalled pitcher Mike Mayers.
Rosenthal’s situation seems to be a little scarier as he is set to get his second opinion on his elbow. The Cardinals brought up Luke Weaver to take Rosenthal’s spot on the roster. Rosenthal took over the closer position and has been doing a solid job, therefore, this injury will certainly affect a struggling Cardinals bullpen.
The Cardinals are hopeful some core pitchers will be able to bounce back and help the Cardinals make a push for the playoffs.
