The Steelers begin the preseason on Friday, August 11 at 7:00 PM against the New York Giants. What should we expect from this game? Well not much work from the starters, that’s for sure. It’s doubtful the first team offense even plays one series, but there’s still a lot we can learn from this game. Here’s some things to look for:
1) How will Joshua Dobbs do?
With Landry Jones hurt (oblique) and Big Ben not playing, it will be up to Joshua Dobbs and Bart Houston to run the offense. This is Dobbs’ first camp but he has looked impressive so far.
2) What kind of depth is there at running back?
Obviously Le’Veon Bell will not play, he is not even in camp. The question then becomes; Will 3rd round pick James Conner play? Probably not. That leaves Fitzgerald Toussaint, Kniles Davis, Terrell Watson, Trey Williams and Brandon Brown-Dukes. Terrell Watson looked very good during the Family Fest goalline drills. Does Watson have a shot at making the team?
3) What about depth at wide receiver?
Antonio Brown will not play, but it is a very crowded group at wide receiver. Martavis Bryant still has not been reinstated from suspension and Sammie Coates is hurt both of them will not play. This leaves Eli Rogers, Marcus Tucker, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Justin Hunter, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Cobi Hamilton and Canaan Severin. There is too many players here and some talented wide receivers are not going to make the team. Will Justin Hunter look as good in a game as he has in practice?
4) How will TJ Watt do?
The 1st round draft pick has looked impressive in camp so far, but how will he do against another team? It is still unknown how much he and James Harrison will end up playing this season. Also keep an eye on OLB Farrington Huguerin. He has a shot at making the team.
5) How will the defensive backfield look?
Right now the defensive backfield is a mess because of injuries. Artie Burns, Senquez Golson, Cameron Sutton and Mike Mitchell all have some type of injury. That leaves Ross Cockrell, William Gay, Coty Sensabaugh, Mike Hilton, Brian Allen, Brandon Dixon, Greg Ducre and JaCorey Shepherd. If undrafted free agent Mike Hilton has a good camp, he might make the team.
