Steelers Training Camp Week 1 Winners and Losers

Justin Hunter: With Martavis Bryant not able to fully participate in camp, Justin Hunter has taken advantage and worked well with Ben Roethlisberger. Could this mean Justin Hunter will have a larger role in the offense or will he go down the depth chart when Sammie Coates and Bryant return?
Alejandro Villanueva: How can you not love this guy? He was an Army Ranger, earned a Bronze Star for valor and served three tours of duty in Afghanistan. Now he is financially set after signing a 4 year, $24 million contract. The Steelers really need him at left tackle so this is great news all around.
Artie Burns: Last year had a solid rookie season but in training camp got burned by Antonio Brown. This year he’s doing a lot better covering Antonio Brown. Antonio Brown is still beating him, but no shame in losing to the best wide receiver on the planet!
Tyler Matakevich: He’s behind Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams on the depth chart at ILB, but the backup at this position is sure to get plenty of playing time. Matakevich so far has looked good in camp. He’s undersized but is making the most of his opportunities.

Martavis Bryant: We learned last week that Bryant has yet to be ‘fully reinstated’ by the NFL, but can’t fully participate in training camp. What happened? Is this Bryant’s fault? His agent’s fault? The NFL? Regardless, it’s hard to depend on the guy. He should be a major part of this offense and one of the reasons the Steelers could win a Super Bowl. Instead, we’re wondering if he’ll be around at all.
James Conner: First he misses OTA’s because of hamstring problem, now he’s out with a shoulder injury. He’s a great story but when are we going to see him play?? Hopefully the injuries are minor. Speaking of injuries…
Senquez Golson: Another injury? The poor guy can’t catch a break. The 2015 2nd round pick had season-ending shoulder surgery in 2015, season-ending foot surgery in 2016 and was carted off the field Sunday with a hamstring injury. This is his last chance with the Steelers so here’s hoping for quick recovery.
