Rafael Devers: The Next Phenom Third Baseman Has Arrived

On July 25, 2017 Rafael Devers will make his awaited Major League debut for the Boston Red Sox. Some say he’s the answer for the struggling third base problem. Others say Dave Dombrowski and company are rushing the 20 year old prospect.

Although he only played 9 games in AAA Pawtucket, his combined numbers are .311 BA with 20 homers and 60 runs batted in. The most intriguing stats is his On Base Percentage (OBP) .377. Every player combined who has manned the position this year for the team’s OBP is a mere .225

The Dominican Republic native will be batting 9th in the lineup against the Seattle Mariners. Ironically enough, OF Andrew Benintendi also made his major league debut against the Mariners last season. Devers brings raw power and average defense to the club. Scouts and analysts believe he is the player of the future, but have concerns about his defense at the major league level.

He is being introduced into a winning situation. A team with solid postseason contention could give him the confidence he needs, or he could crack under the pressure of not being prepared. The Red Sox are used to bringing up prospects this late in the season. Xander Bogaerts was called up in august 2013 and Andrew Benintendi was called up on August 2016. Both players are having great seasons.

All eyes will be on Rafael Devers as he makes his case to be the everyday starter for one of the most storied franchises in MLB history. His chapter starts now.
