It appears the Pittsburgh Pirates are leaning against trading star center fielder Andrew McCutchen.
Team officials say they’ve given Cutch no indication whether or not they’ll pick up his club option for 2018.
It’s not at all surprising the Pirates plan to keep their star player around for the time being. The club option is a reasonable $14.5 million. They would be crazy if they didn’t plan to pick it up.
Letting McCutchen walk would be just as crazy. He’s been lights out since late May. Despite a rocky start following a rocky season in 2016, Cutch is batting .292/.384/.507 with 17 homers and 57 RBI.
Trading Cutch right now would bring in a hefty return, but it would likely be the final straw for many Buccos fans, given how popular he is with the fan base and with the team playing well with a division title within their grasp.
If you were GM Neil Huntington, would you trade Cutch right now?
