Reports are out that the Arizona Diamondbacks are looking to add a big bat to their lineup. They are recently being connected to JD Martinez, but I think they have other priorities over an outfielder. Even though there are not many out there, the Diamondbacks should be looking into finding a catcher. Jeff Mathis, Chris Iannetta and Chris Herrmann have really struggled at the dish this year. They should also look to add a reliever to bolster their bullpen. Fernando Rodney does have 22 saves on the season, but his ERA is an abysmal 5.58. Lets explore some of the trade options for the Diamondbacks.
Acquiring JD Martinez and Alex Avila from the Tigers
JD Martinez to the Diamondbacks was the most recent rumor, but lets add a little twist to it. The Diamondbacks desperately need a catcher and there are not many options out there. Avila and Martinez are free agents this winter and the Tigers have looked awful all year. They will be looking to move most of their expiring or big contracts. I think the Diamondbacks would be smart to try and snag both of these players from the Tigers. Martinez got a late start to the season as a foot injury caused him to miss some time. However, since coming back he has put up some solid numbers. Martinez is batting .298 to go along with 14 HR and 32 RBI in 54 games played this season. AJ Pollock and David Peralta have two of the outfield positions locked down for the Dbacks. The other outfield spot has been split primarily between Yasmany Tomas and Chris Owings. Owings is primarily a SS, while Tomas is on the 10-Day DL right now. Martinez would be an upgrade over Tomas and would allow the Diamondbacks to keep Owings at SS. Alex Avila is having a solid season for the Tigers as well. In 191 at-bats this season, Avila is batting .298 with 11 HR and 29 RBIs. Like I already mentioned Herrmann, Iannetta, and Mathis have struggled mightily this season for the Dbacks. Combined they are batting .197 to go along with 17 HR and 53 RBI. Avila would obviously be an upgrade. The Tigers should be looking for a solid return, but nothing too crazy since both players are one-year rentals. However, the Diamondbacks’ farm system is rather thing so they may need to part ways with some of their “top” prospects. A package of Chris Herrmann, Socrates Brito, Curtis Taylor and Tyler Mark should do. The Tigers do not have an answer at the catching position right now, especially after trading away Avila. They have James McCan, but he has not proven to be very reliable. They take on Chris Herrmann in the trade in hopes that a change of scenery can help. Brito has seen some time in the bigs, but a hand injury has set him back recently. He is in Triple-A right now and hitting well. In 40 games this season he is batting .312 with 2 HR and 20 RBIs. He may be able to crack the Major League roster this year for the Tigers and they can look to him to make an impact for them next year. Curtis Taylor is a 21-year old Right-Handed Starting Pitcher for the Single-A Diamondbacks’ affiliate. He is having a solid season as he has posted a 3.32 ERA in 62.1 innings of work to go along with 68 strikeouts. Scouts say he may eventually move to the bullpen as his sinker-slider combo could be nasty for an inning or two of work. Tyler Mark is a 22-year old Right-Handed relief pitcher who is also in Single-A for the Diamondbacks right now. In 42 innings of work he has posted a 4-2 record to go along with 3 saves and a 2.57 ERA. He is projected as a future set-up man out of the pen in the big leagues. The Tigers take all they can get from the Diamondbacks as neither farm system is anything to brag about.
After this trade the Diamondbacks can put out a lineup that may potentially look like this:
AJ Pollock (CF)
David Peralta (LF)
Paul Goldschmidt (1B)
Jake Lamb (3B)
JD Martinez (RF)
Chris Owings (SS)
Alex Avila (C)
Brandon Drury (2B)
This would for sure be an upgrade over the lineup they have.
Acquire Addison Reed from the Mets
As I mentioned Rodney has been able to save 22 games, but he is top 5 in the league in blown saves to go along with a 5.58 ERA. Finding an arm who can replace him as closer will be ideal for the Diamondbacks. I think the player can be Addison Reed from the Mets. The Mets are in the same boat as the Tigers, they are looking to move some expiring contracts as they have not had a very good season. Addison Reed is having a much better season than Rodney. In less opportunities he has 15 saves to go along with a 2.53 ERA. Reed is also a better option than other closers on the market since he should cost the Diamondbacks less as they may want to give up more in a bigger trade (a trade with the Tigers perhaps). A package of Dawel Lugo and a pitching prospect outside of the Diamondbacks top 30 should do. The Mets are looking for a future 3B to go along with SS Amed Rosario and 1B Dominic Smith. Maybe Dawel Lugo can be their answer. Lugo is in Double-A for the Dbacks right now and projects to make an impact at the MLB level some time next season. This year in Double-A he is hitting .279 with 7 HR and 42 RBI. With Jake Lamb at 3B for the Diamondbacks it is unlikely that Lugo will make an impact any time soon. Giving him up for a much needed upgrade at closer will be a smart move for Arizona.
